How long to study for SC-500: an estimate built from the outline

Short answer

Plan on about three weeks if you already secure Azure at work, about two and a half if you prepared for AZ-500, and eight if most of the material is new to you. Microsoft's 12 free SC-500 learning paths list about 30 hours on their own; practice questions, labs and review come on top.

The short answer

Three to eight weeks, depending on where you start. Microsoft’s SC-500 pages give no study-time estimate. The one below is ours, built from two things Microsoft does publish: the size of the outline and the length of its own free training.

Your starting point Realistic length
You secure Azure at work now and need to close gaps About 3 weeks, roughly 30 to 40 hours
You prepared for AZ-500, or passed it About 2.5 weeks, most of it on the new material
You hold AZ-104, the Azure Administrator certification About 8 weeks
Most of the material is new to you About 8 weeks, roughly 56 hours, then a short review week

These are the four calendars in our SC-500 study guide. The rest of this page shows where the numbers come from.

What you are studying for

The SC-500 outline has four domains and, by our count, 87 objectives (SC-500 study guide):

Domain Weight Objectives
Manage identity, access, and governance 20–25% 22
Secure storage, databases, and networking 25–30% 16
Secure compute 20–25% 29, of which 11 on securing AI
Manage and monitor security posture 20–25% 20

The exam runs 120 minutes and may include interactive components (certification page). A score of 700 or greater passes, on a scaled score from 1 to 1,000 (exam scoring).

What Microsoft’s free training adds up to

Course SC-500T00 runs four days with an instructor, or you can take it as 12 self-paced learning paths, one for each subgroup of the outline (course SC-500T00). Each path page lists its own time. On October 20, 2026 they read:

Learning path Modules Listed time
Secure access to resources by using Microsoft Entra 3 1 hr 30 min
Secure Azure Key Vault with defense in depth 4 1 hr 44 min
Enforce security governance and regulatory compliance 6 2 hr 23 min
Implement security for Azure Storage 4 1 hr 40 min
Implement security for Azure SQL databases 3 1 hr 2 min
Implement network security controls in Azure 4 2 hr 52 min
Implement security for AI 9 3 hr 59 min
Implement security for servers and virtual machines 7 2 hr 57 min
Secure Azure application platform services 6 3 hr 9 min
Manage security posture by using Microsoft Defender for Cloud 6 3 hr 33 min
Implement activity and event collection in Microsoft Sentinel 8 3 hr 38 min
Deploy and operate Microsoft Security Copilot 3 1 hr 41 min
Total 63 about 30 hours

Two things stand out. First, 30 hours is the time listed for the modules themselves. Your own practice questions, labs and review come on top. Second, the training time doesn’t follow the exam weights. The compute paths take about 10 hours, a third of the total, while the storage, databases and networking paths, for the heaviest domain at 25–30%, take under 6. Don’t let the length of a path set the length of your study for that domain.

How the time adds up in our plans

  • Three weeks: 1.5 to 2 hours on weekdays and about 3 hours on one weekend day. That is roughly 10 to 13 hours a week, or 30 to 40 in all. It assumes Azure security is already part of your job.
  • Eight weeks: about an hour on weekdays and 2 hours on one weekend day, roughly 7 hours a week and 56 in all. A short ninth week follows for the mock exam and review.
  • From AZ-500: about two and a half weeks, starting with the three new blocks: securing AI, Sentinel data collection and Security Copilot.
  • From AZ-104: the eight-week plan, testing yourself first on the familiar parts (storage, network filtering, Azure Policy, locks) and spending the saved time on Entra, Key Vault, Defender for Cloud, Sentinel and AI.

Every plan follows the same rhythm: read a section one day, answer its questions the next, and come back to the misses a few days later.

Is SC-500 hard?

Microsoft’s SC-500 pages give no pass rate. What we can say from the outline is where the difficulty comes from.

  • Breadth. The 87 objectives run from Entra sign-in controls through Azure networking, storage and SQL to containers, AI agents and Security Copilot (SC-500 study guide).
  • Many admin portals. The 11 AI objectives alone touch the SharePoint admin center, the Microsoft Purview portal, the Power Platform admin center, the Microsoft Entra admin center, the Microsoft Defender portal, the Azure portal, the Foundry portal and the Microsoft 365 admin center.
  • Preview features. Most questions cover generally available features, but commonly used preview features may appear (SC-500 study guide). Some AI controls in the outline are still in preview, such as external threat detection for Copilot Studio agents (Copilot Studio) and agent guardrails in Foundry (Foundry guardrails).
  • Licensing that moves. Since July 1, 2026, the AI agent security capabilities for Copilot Studio and Foundry agents in Microsoft Defender need a Microsoft Agent 365 license (transition to Agent 365). Material written before that date can be wrong on this point.
  • Experience assumed. Microsoft’s audience profile asks for practical experience administering Azure and hybrid environments, strong familiarity with Microsoft Entra ID, and familiarity with Microsoft 365 administration (SC-500 study guide).
  • No Microsoft practice assessment yet. The certification page said on October 20, 2026 that the SC-500 practice assessment was not currently available (certification page), so it is harder to check your readiness against Microsoft’s own question style.

Is SC-500 still in beta?

Not according to Microsoft’s own pages. Microsoft’s June 25, 2026 roundup listed SC-500 as in beta, with general availability in July 2026 (Credentials roundup). Pearson VUE’s schedule expected the beta and training to go live in May 2026 and the exam in July 2026 (Pearson VUE). The certification page carries no beta notice. It says practice assessments usually arrive within 8 weeks of an exam leaving beta, and that the SC-500 one is not available yet (certification page). Check that page again before you book.

Booking and cost

The exam is scheduled through Pearson VUE from the certification page, and the price depends on the country or region where you take it. If you don’t pass, you can retake it 24 hours later; the wait for later attempts varies (certification page).
